Rudder vs. Waller: Wrap-Up

STORY BY: JORDAN MESEROLE

BRYAN – The Rudder Ranger offense was shutdown completely in the second half of Friday night’s homecoming game as the Waller Bulldogs rolled to an easy 44-14 victory at Merrill Green Stadium.

Rudder senior running back Trey Guyton was held to just 33 yards in the second half, as the Waller (2-4, 1-3 District 18-4A) defense constantly broke through the Rangers’ (2-4, 2-3) offensive line disrupting the offensive schemes all night.

Waller rattled off 23 unanswered points to start off the first half, including an 81-yard punt return by senior Race Mellman with 2:33 left in the second quarter.  The Bulldogs featured a run-heavy attack against Rudder, racking up 264 yards on the ground, led by senior running back Josh Cunningham who gained 77 yards and senior quarterback Rhett Loewe who added another 44 yards and two rushing scores.

Rudder’s lone bright point on the night was from Guyton, who once again eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the sixth time this season, racking up 137 yards on the ground and put up the Rangers’ only two scores on the night.

The Rangers will attempt to regroup to prepare for a tough battle next Friday, as they travel to Brenham to face the district leading Brenham Cubs (5-1, 4-0) and what may be a final chance at staying in the District 18-4A race.
